Counter Strike 2 Cases: Drops, Keys and Odds
1 min read
One care package a week, Prime only, and a key you cannot trade back. The published drop rates explain why opening cases is rarely the cheap route to a skin.
Counter Strike 2 cases are the containers sitting behind nearly every skin in the game, and getting hold of them is more restricted than new players expect.
Getting cases for free
Drops arrive as a weekly care package. Play on official Valve servers, earn XP, and the rank-up at 5,000 XP produces the package. Inside are a weapon case, a skin and two graffiti, and you pick two of them.
Two conditions catch people out:
- Prime Status is required. Non-Prime accounts get no drops at all.
- One package per week. Grinding past that earns you nothing extra.
Opening them
Every case needs a matching key, sold in-game at $2.49. Keys bought today cannot be traded or sold on the Community Market, so the purchase is one you cannot reverse.
The odds
Valve publishes the rates, and they are unforgiving:
- Mil-Spec — 79.92%
- Restricted — 15.98%
- Classified — 3.20%
- Covert — 0.64%
- Rare Special Item, meaning knives and gloves — 0.26%
That last line is roughly one in 385 openings before the key cost. Buying the exact skin you want on the market is almost always cheaper than chasing it.
