The film is called A Minecraft Movie, it came out in 2025, and it made close to a billion dollars. A sequel is already dated for 2027.

The Minecraft film has an official title that is easy to miss: A Minecraft Movie. Warner Bros. released it on 2 April 2025 internationally and 4 April 2025 in the United States, after more than a decade of the project being announced, delayed and recast.

How it did

Around $961 million worldwide — one of the biggest video game adaptations ever made, and comfortably profitable. Critics were far cooler on it than audiences were; it sits below average on review aggregators while cinemas filled anyway.

Live action, not animation

Real actors in a rendered Overworld. The blocky world is CG, the humans are not, and that mix is the single most divisive thing about it. Mobs, crafting and the Nether all appear, so it reads as Minecraft rather than a generic fantasy film.

The sequel

A Minecraft Movie Squared is dated for 23 July 2027. Momoa, Black, Brooks and Coolidge return, Matt Berry is back, and Kirsten Dunst joins the cast.
