Baldur's Gate 3 Hirelings: How to Recruit and Customise
1 min read
A generic companion for 100 gold, fully rebuildable at any time. Here is where to get one and what you can and can't change.
Baldurs Gate 3 hirelings fill a party slot with a custom-built companion instead of one of the story's named characters.
Getting one
Speak to Withers at camp once your party reaches level 3. Each hireling costs 100 gold. You choose their appearance at recruitment; class, ability scores, name and looks can all be changed afterwards too, through Withers or the Magic Mirror.
What's fixed and what isn't
- Fixed: body type, voice, race, background.
- Changeable any time: name, class, ability scores, appearance — the same level of customisation as the Dark Urge or a fully custom origin character gets.
The limits
- Maximum three hirelings in the party at once.
- You need an open party slot, or you replace an existing member.
- Dismiss one and re-recruit it later, and it comes back at level one with default stats — there is no way to bank progress on a hireling you let go.
Why use one over a companion
A hireling fills a role your existing companions don't cover — a second full caster, a dedicated tank — without waiting for a story character with the right build to show up. The trade-off is obvious: no personal quest, no reactivity, no voice in camp conversations.
