Genshin Impact HoYoverse: Who Actually Makes the Game

HoYoverse and miHoYo are not quite the same company, and the difference explains why the branding looks the way it does.

Genshin Impact HoYoverse is the publishing brand that handles the game everywhere outside Greater China. The developer, miHoYo, is based in Shanghai; HoYoverse is its international arm.

The corporate structure

HoYoverse operates under the legal entity Cognosphere Pte. Ltd., established in 2021. The HoYoverse brand name itself launched on 14 February 2022 specifically for markets outside Greater China — inside China, the games are still published under the miHoYo name.

Where it is based

Headquartered in Singapore, with regional offices in Los Angeles, Montreal, Tokyo and Seoul supporting localisation, community management and regional operations.

What else it publishes

Genshin Impact sits alongside HoYoverse's other live-service titles: Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai: Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero and Tears of Themis. All follow a similar model of an in-house Chinese developer with HoYoverse handling the international release.

Why the naming trips people up

Older articles and in-game credits from before 2022 reference miHoYo directly, which is why both names still show up depending on how old the source is.
