League of Legends Borders: Level and Ranked Explained
1 min read
Two separate systems share the name, and only one of them is permanent. What unlocks each border and what happens to it at the end of the year.
League of Legends borders are two different systems that get constantly mixed up: the level border framing your profile icon, and the ranked border tied to your tier. Neither can be bought.
Level borders
These come from summoner level and are permanent. New designs unlock at levels 1, 30, 50 and 75, then every 25 levels up to 500 — Piltover at the bottom, Eternus at the top. Nothing has been added past 500.
The detail people miss: unlocking a new one does not force it on you. Every border you have earned stays selectable, so you can keep an older design you prefer.
Ranked borders
Your ranked border reflects your current tier in that queue, not your peak. It frames your profile icon and your loading screen portrait, and it changes the moment you promote or demote.
It also does not survive the year. Ranked ladders soft-reset annually and the border resets with your visible rank.
Season reward borders
Winning enough ranked games in a split earns the Victorious skin and a matching loading screen border for the tier you finished at. Those are kept — they are the only ranked borders that do not vanish at reset.
