Is Apex Legends Free? What You Actually Pay For

The full battle royale and a starter roster cost nothing. Here is exactly what money buys instead, and why none of it touches balance.

Apex Legends free access covers more than people expect the first time they check: there's no paywall on the core game, no premium tier, and no Legend that's permanently locked behind spending you can't work around.

What costs nothing

The full battle royale, all game modes, and a starter roster of Legends. Everything you need to play a complete match is there from install.

What costs money — or time

  • New Legends — unlocked with 12,000 Legend Tokens, earned purely by levelling up, or bought outright for 750 Apex Coins if you don't want to wait.
  • Battle Pass — a paid track of cosmetic rewards each season, alongside a free track anyone gets automatically.
  • Cosmetics — skins, charms and packs, all appearance-only. None of it affects a gun's damage or a Legend's ability.

The one thing that's genuinely self-sustaining

Apex Coins earned through the free Battle Pass track can be put toward next season's pass, so a player who never spends real money can keep the cycle going once they've bought in once — it just takes longer than paying outright.

Why it stays free

Apex is EA's live-service model: the game is the acquisition funnel, and Battle Passes plus cosmetics are the revenue. Nothing sold affects competitive balance, which is also why it's clean to play against paying and non-paying players alike.
