GTA 5 Download Steam: What to Expect

Buying it is the easy part. The download itself needs real disk space, an SSD if you want it to run well, and a bit of patience.

A GTA 5 download, Steam users find, is straightforward — but the size of it catches people who have not checked their free space first.

Space to set aside

Expect somewhere around 90GB to 105GB, depending on the current build. Steam's store page shows the exact live figure before you commit to downloading — check it rather than relying on an old number from a guide.

What you are actually installing

Since March 2025, every PC copy — Steam included — installs the "Expanded & Enhanced" build, the same visual and performance upgrade PS5 and Xbox Series players got back in 2022. There is no separate "legacy" purchase to avoid.

Before you start

  • Install to an SSD if you have one — Rockstar recommends it, and load times suffer badly on a mechanical drive.
  • Leave spare space beyond the install size for GTA Online's ongoing updates.
  • Make sure Steam is set to a fast download region if the initial speed looks off.

After it finishes

First launch runs a check-in with the Rockstar Games Launcher and your Social Club account — that is normal, not a second download.
