GTA 5 Budget and Profit: The Numbers Behind It
1 min read
It cost around $265 million to make and market, and made that back inside a single day. The numbers since have kept climbing.
GTA 5 budget and profit numbers are both extreme, which is why they get quoted so often in "most expensive game ever" conversations.
The budget
Combined development and marketing spend is estimated at roughly £170 million (about $265 million), spread across more than 1,000 people working at Rockstar studios worldwide. At launch, that made it the most expensive video game ever produced.
The return
- $800 million in sales on day one.
- $1 billion within the first three days — faster than any entertainment product had managed at the time, film included.
- Over 230 million copies shipped since 2013.
- Close to $10 billion in lifetime revenue.
Why the profit kept growing
A one-off game sale would have made its money back and stopped. GTA Online is what turned this into a decade-long revenue stream — ongoing updates and microtransactions have out-earned the base game many times over since 2013.
The takeaway
Very few entertainment products of any kind have matched this ratio of upfront cost to long-term return.
