GTA 5 Downloadable Content: Story Mode vs Online

Story mode has never had DLC — a planned expansion was cancelled. Every update since 2013 has gone into GTA Online instead.

GTA 5 downloadable content has a split history: story mode got none of it, and GTA Online got over a decade of it.

Story mode never shipped an expansion

Rockstar teased single-player DLC in December 2013, similar to GTA IV's The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. It was cancelled. The story you finish today is the same one that launched in 2013 — no extra missions, no new protagonist arc.

Where the content actually went

Everything after launch became GTA Online content instead:

  • Heists (March 2015) — one of the largest updates the game has had, adding cooperative heist missions and a wave of vehicles.
  • The Doomsday Heist, The Diamond Casino Heist and The Cayo Perico Heist — later heist-focused expansions, each with its own setup missions.
  • Recent additions keep coming — a Kortz Center heist update landed in summer 2026 with new heists, vehicles and rewards.

What that means for you

If you are chasing new story content, there is not any coming. If you want new content full stop, GTA Online is where Rockstar has been putting it since 2015.
