Hogwarts Legacy First Trial: How the Tutorial Trial Works

Trials of Merlin opens the trial system with the easiest puzzle type in the game — a fire trial that exists purely to teach the timing.

The Hogwarts Legacy first trial arrives through the Trials of Merlin main quest, which unlocks once you have finished Tomes and Tribulations.

What the tutorial trial teaches

Merlin Trials are marked by standing stones across the map, and this one uses the simplest puzzle type: Burning Pyres. Several pyres stand in a small area, sinking into the ground a few seconds after they appear. Cast Incendio on each one before it drops and the trial clears.

It is a short-range spell and a short window, which is exactly the point — the game is teaching you to read a timer and hit a target fast, before later trials complicate the formula with platforms, giant balls and butterflies.

Before you can start

You need mallowsweets to activate a trial marker. Interacting with a standing stone without one just tells you what it is hungry for.

Why the first one matters

There are 95 Merlin Trials spread across all 14 regions, and completing them in batches of 2, 8, 18, 32 and 52 pays out extra gear storage slots. The tutorial trial is the one that decides whether the mechanic clicks before the game starts asking more of you.
