Hogwarts Legacy: In the Shadow of the Study is a Sebastian Sallow relationship quest, and it is the point where his questline stops being subtext and starts being a dark magic problem.

Before you can start it

You need In the Shadow of the Undercroft, In the Shadow of the Estate, In the Shadow of the Bloodline and The High Keep all finished first, then some in-game time to pass before Sebastian reaches out again.

What happens

Sebastian meets you outside the Slytherin common room with Ominis in tow. The three of you light three braziers to open a hidden door into a dungeon beneath the castle, then work through three Slytherin Lock puzzles — symbol-matching locks that gate the route forward.

At the end sits an altar holding a spellbook — the point the quest turns into a decision rather than a walkthrough.

The Crucio choice

The spellbook offers Crucio, one of the Unforgivable Curses, and the game gives you a real dialogue choice over whether to learn it. Saying yes adds the spell; declining moves the story on without it.

What follows

Finishing this quest unlocks In the Shadow of Discovery, the next step in Sebastian's questline.
