Red Dead Redemption 2 Book: What Actually Exists
2 min read
Rockstar never published a novelisation, so most of what turns up under this search is a strategy guide or one genuine work of history.
Search "red dead redemption 2 book" and you get a mixed bag, because Rockstar has never put its name on a tie-in novel. Here is what is actually out there.
No official novelisation
Unlike some franchises, RDR2's story has never been adapted into prose fiction by Rockstar or a licensed publisher. If you want the plot, the game is the only official text.
The launch strategy guide
A printed companion guide sold alongside the game at launch in 2018, covering the map, missions and collectibles the way console-era strategy guides always did. Print runs of these age out fast — expect to find one secondhand rather than on a current shelf.
The one worth reading: Red Dead's History
Red Dead's History, published in August 2024, is a genuine work of nonfiction by Tore Olsson, a history professor at the University of Tennessee. It uses the game's setting as a route into the real Reconstruction and Gilded Age American West the fiction is built on. The audiobook edition is narrated by Roger Clark — Arthur Morgan's own actor reading about the history behind him.
If you want lore instead
Everything canonical sits inside the game itself: newspapers, letters, and the dialogue you overhear at camp. No outside book adds plot the game does not already contain.
