The Witcher 3 Switch 2: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not
2 min read
You can play it on the new hardware today. What you cannot do is buy a Switch 2 Edition, because CD Projekt Red has never announced one.
The Witcher 3 Switch 2 question has one clean answer and one messy one. Clean: yes, you can play it. Messy: there is still no dedicated Switch 2 Edition, and CD Projekt Red has never said there will be.
What actually works today
The 2019 Nintendo Switch release — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition — runs on Switch 2 through backward compatibility. That is the original port, with its original resolution and settings, benefiting from faster hardware rather than from any new build. Expect quicker loading and a steadier frame rate, not a visual overhaul.
What has not been announced
- No Switch 2 Edition, no paid upgrade path, no free patch.
- No release window, because there is no announced product to give one to.
Asked directly about a Switch 2 upgrade in April 2025, CD Projekt Red declined to commit, saying its focus for the console was Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. The position has not visibly changed since.
The signal that matters most
In 2026 CDPR announced a third Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past, co-developed with Fool's Theory and aimed at 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Nintendo platforms were not on that list.
What to do now
If you want it portable, the existing Switch version plays fine on Switch 2 and is frequently discounted. If you want ray tracing and the expansion, that is the PS5, Xbox Series or PC build.
