Dota 2 Arcanas: What They Are and How They Work
1 min read
The most expensive cosmetic tier in the game, and the only one that changes a hero's animations and sounds rather than just their look.
Dota 2 arcanas sit above every other cosmetic tier — not just a new model, but a full replacement of a hero's animations, sounds and effects, sold as its own item rather than bundled into a set.
What changes
- Model and animations — arcanas rebuild the hero from the ground up, down to how their attacks and abilities look.
- Sound — new voice lines and ability sounds, not just a skin layered over the old ones.
- Ability effects — spell particles are reworked to match the arcana's theme.
- Some arcanas add extra unlockable content later, tracked through in-game challenges rather than being finished on purchase.
How they're sold
Arcanas are bought directly from the in-game store as single items, separate from the Battle Pass system, and they don't rotate out — once you own one, it's yours permanently.
The roster
Only a fraction of the hero pool has one. Juggernaut, Windranger and Phantom Assassin were among the earliest, and Valve has added more heroes to the list steadily since. The current full list is best checked in the store itself, since new arcanas ship several times a year and any list written down goes out of date quickly.
