Dota 2 Counter Pick: How to Draft Against a Hero
1 min read
Counter picking is less about memorising matchup charts and more about reading what a hero actually struggles with — and drafting it in before they lock their pick.
A dota 2 counter pick is a hero drafted specifically to beat a matchup the enemy has already committed to, and it works because certain tools reliably answer certain problems.
The categories that matter
- Silence and disables beat mana-dependent or channelling heroes who need to cast freely to function.
- Burst damage and stuns beat squishy heroes with no escape.
- True sight and detection beat any pick that leans on invisibility.
- Magic immunity beats heroes whose entire kit is spell damage, if there's nothing physical behind it.
- Mobility and escapes beat ganking heroes who need to land an initiation to do anything.
Draft timing
Counter picking only works if you pick after the hero you're countering. In Captain's Mode-style drafts that means holding a flexible pick until the enemy has committed, rather than locking in early and hoping.
Don't over-index on it
A "hard counter" on paper still loses to a better player, more farm, or a team that just plays around the matchup. Treat counter picks as an edge, not a guarantee — the rest of the draft still decides most matches.
