GTA 5 on Epic Games: Store Page and the 2020 Giveaway

GTA V has been sold on Epic Games since 2020 — the same year Epic gave it away free and briefly took its own store down doing it.

GTA 5 Epic Games Store availability has been in place since 2020, and it is the same Enhanced build sold everywhere else — no missing features, no separate patch schedule.

The famous giveaway

From 15 to 21 May 2020, Epic gave the game away free through its launcher. Demand was high enough that the store itself went down for more than eight hours on 14–15 May, throwing "Error 500" pages at anyone trying to claim it. GTA Online then got its own separate overload once everyone who grabbed the game logged in at once.

Buying it now

Purchasing through Epic gets you the full game, launched through the Epic Games Launcher, with your actual progress still tracked through a linked Rockstar Games Social Club account — the same as on Steam.

Achievements

Epic's storefront does not run its own achievement overlay for GTA V the way Steam does. Rockstar's own in-game stat tracking still works regardless.

Worth remembering

If you claimed it free in 2020, it is permanently yours on that Epic account — there is no expiry on giveaway copies.
