GTA Online Game: What It Is a Decade In

It is not a mode bolted onto GTA V any more. Here is what the game actually consists of now, and where a new player should start.

The GTA Online game started as a multiplayer mode attached to GTA V in 2013. More than a decade of updates later it is the larger half of the product, and on current consoles it can be installed without the story at all.

What it consists of

  • A shared open world — the Los Santos map, with up to thirty players in a session.
  • Heists — multi-stage co-op jobs with setup missions, the biggest of which is the Diamond Casino Heist.
  • Businesses — properties that generate income and need managing: nightclubs, bunkers, agencies, arcades.
  • Races, deathmatches and modes — including whatever the current seasonal update added.

How it differs from story mode

Story mode is finite and finished. Online is an economy. Almost everything is priced in GTA$, and the loop is earning enough to buy the thing that lets you earn faster.

Shark Cards are the shortcut, which is the honest reason prices climb over time.

Where a new player should start

Do not buy property first. Run contact missions and heists with other players until you have a few hundred thousand, then buy something that generates income rather than something that looks good.

The thing nobody warns you about

Public sessions contain players who will kill you repeatedly for no reason. Learn where the Invite Only option is early — most business work does not need a public lobby at all.
