League of Legends Guide for New Players in 2026

The map, the five roles, the one mechanic that decides games, and the 2026 objective changes that make older guides misleading.

A League of Legends guide worth reading starts with one fact: you win by destroying the enemy Nexus. Kills, dragons and towers are all a means to that, and a team can lose badly on the scoreboard and still win the game.

The map

Summoner's Rift has three lanes with a jungle between them. Five players a side: top, mid, jungler, and a bot lane pair of marksman and support.

The skill that decides games

Last-hitting. Minions only pay gold to whoever lands the killing blow. New players chase kills; the ones who climb hit minions cleanly and get their items first.

Objectives in 2026

  • Void Grubs spawn once, at eight minutes, and despawn if nobody takes them.
  • Dragons grant permanent team-wide buffs and stack across a game.
  • Baron Nashor is back to a 20-minute spawn and empowers your minions.

Riot removed Atakhan and Feats of Strength for the 2026 season to cut objective fatigue, so anything written earlier overstates how much is on the map.

What to do first

Pick two champions and learn them properly rather than sampling the roster. Top or support are the kindest starting roles — both let you build fundamentals without being responsible for the whole map.
