Overwatch 2 Free to Play: What That Actually Means
1 min read
Overwatch 2 replaced a paid game with a free one — and that switch is why the sequel looks so different from the original.
Overwatch 2 free to play was the headline change when it replaced the original Overwatch in October 2022 — the base game went from a paid purchase to a free download on every platform.
What free gets you
The full game: every mode, every map, and — since Season 10 — every hero, with no unlock grind or purchase required to play any of them. Early seasons gated new heroes behind the battle pass's free track; Blizzard dropped that system after player pushback.
What's monetised instead
- Battle passes — a paid track for cosmetics, alongside a free track everyone gets.
- The item shop — direct purchases of skins and sprays with premium currency.
- Bundles — themed cosmetic sets tied to events and story updates.
None of it affects gameplay. Skins don't change hitboxes, stats or performance.
Why it went free
Overwatch 1 sold as a one-time purchase; Overwatch 2 needed a much bigger, constantly-playing audience to support live seasonal content.
