A free-to-play battle royale spun out of the mainline Call of Duty series, now sharing seasons and progression with Black Ops 7. Here is the shape of it.

The Call of Duty Warzone game is the free-to-play battle royale spun off the main Call of Duty series, first launched in 2020 and still running.

What it is

Squads of up to three or four drop onto a large map, fight to be the last team standing as a gas circle closes in, and can buy their way back into a fight using cash earned during the match. It sits alongside — but does not require — the premium, numbered Call of Duty releases.

How it fits the wider franchise

Warzone now shares its seasonal structure with Black Ops 7: the same season number, Battle Pass, weapons and Operators feed both, so owning Black Ops 7 changes what you unlock but is not needed to play Warzone at all.

What you need

Just the free client, downloaded through the Call of Duty HQ launcher on PC, PlayStation or Xbox, and an internet connection — the game is always online, even solo.

Modes on offer

Battle Royale, Resurgence and Plunder are the standing modes, with limited-time variants rotating through most seasons.
