Cyberpunk 2077 Alt: Who She Really Is
1 min read
The first person on record to survive as pure data — and the reason Johnny Silverhand ended up digitised himself.
Cyberpunk 2077 Alt refers to Alt Cunningham, a character whose history predates the game by decades and whose fingerprints are over most of its central mystery.
Who she was
A corporate netrunner, sharp and controlled where Johnny Silverhand was loud and reckless — the contrast is part of what drew them together, according to the game's flashback sequences. She was kidnapped, and Arasaka forced her to build Soulkiller, the program that can strip a mind out of a living body.
What Soulkiller did to her
Arasaka turned the program on Alt herself, digitising her consciousness. That made her the first known case of a person surviving as pure data rather than a body — a status the game treats as unprecedented rather than routine, even in a world full of digitised minds.
Her role in the present
Trapped in the Net, Alt becomes essential once Johnny's engram is running loose in V's head: finding her is a central step toward resolving what happens to both Johnny and V by the end of the story. Most of what the late game explains about digitised consciousness runs through her.
