Dota 2 All Heroes: How to Browse and Filter the Grid
1 min read
Every hero is unlocked from the start, so the real skill is filtering 127 of them down to the handful worth learning first.
Dota 2 all heroes are visible and playable from your very first match — there's no unlock grind — which makes the hero selection screen the actual challenge rather than any paywall.
Role tags
Every hero in the grid carries role tags set by Valve: Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, Jungler, Durable, Escape, Initiator and Pusher. A hero usually has two or three, and they're a faster read on what a hero does than guessing from the name.
Filtering the grid
The hero select screen can be filtered by role, by attribute, and by complexity rating, and searched by name. Complexity is Valve's own difficulty rating and is worth taking seriously if you're picking a first hero rather than browsing for fun.
Favouriting
Right-clicking a hero portrait lets you favourite it, which pins it to the top of the grid. Building a shortlist of five or six favourites across different roles is the quickest way to stop scrolling the full list every single draft.
Grid layout
You can also switch the grid's sort order — by role, by attribute or alphabetically — from the settings above the hero list, which matters more once you're used to finding heroes by muscle memory rather than reading names.
