GTA Online Steam: What Buying It Actually Gets You
2 min read
There is no standalone GTA Online listing on Steam. Here is what your Grand Theft Auto V purchase actually includes, and how the mode launches.
GTA Online Steam access is not a separate purchase. Buying Grand Theft Auto V on Steam is what gets you into it, and the online mode launches from inside that same purchase rather than a standalone download.
No standalone Steam listing
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S got a genuinely standalone GTA Online product when the next-gen version launched in March 2022, free to download without owning GTA V. Steam never got that treatment. On PC the mode ships bundled with the story campaign, and the store page sells them as one title.
Getting into it
Launch Grand Theft Auto V from your Steam library, sit through the Rockstar and Take-Two screens, and pick Grand Theft Auto Online rather than Story Mode from the character-select screen. First time in, you build a character before landing in Los Santos.
Your account carries the progress
Character data lives on your Rockstar Games Social Club account, not your Steam account, which is why the same character shows up if you later install the Rockstar Games Launcher version.
Before you install
GTA Online sits on top of a large base game and Rockstar patches it often, so leave storage and time spare for updates before your first session.
