Overwatch 2 DPS Characters: What Defines the Role

Overwatch 2 DPS characters make up the largest of the game's three roles by hero count, and that size shapes more than just variety — it shapes queue times and how matches actually play out.
Why it's the biggest role
Damage carries the most raw eliminations in a typical match and the widest range of playstyles, from hitscan snipers to melee flankers, so Blizzard has more room to design distinct kits here than in Tank, where only one slot exists per team.
Why the queue is longest
Role queue splits every match into one Tank, two Damage and two Support slots. More players want to play Damage than there are slots for, so its queue times run longer than Tank's — often noticeably so at peak hours.
The role keeps growing
Recent additions to the Damage roster include Emre and Anran, both part of 2026's hero wave, joining a role that's expanded faster than Tank over the game's history simply because it has more room for distinct kits.
Picking one
New Damage players do better starting with a hitscan hero over a flanker — hitscan rewards raw aim without also demanding the positioning and cooldown-tracking a flanker like Genji or Tracer needs to pay off.
