The Witcher 3 Armor Sets: The Witcher School Gear, Explained
1 min read
Six named Witcher School sets exist across the base game and both expansions, each built around a different playstyle.
The Witcher 3 armor sets that matter most are the named Witcher School gear sets — full outfits built around a specific playstyle rather than generic stat sticks.
The base game sets
- Wolf School — the balanced, all-round set, and the one most players wear first.
- Griffin School — leans into Sign intensity, suited to a Signs-heavy build.
- Bear School — heavy armour with a focus on raw attack power.
Expansion-exclusive sets
- Cat (Feline) School — added with Hearts of Stone, built for speed and critical hits.
- Manticore School — added with Blood and Wine, tuned around Alchemy builds.
- Viper School — also added with Blood and Wine, the lightest set in the game.
How you get them
Each set is unlocked through its own treasure hunt questline, starting from a diagram, then crafted and later upgraded at armourers and blacksmiths through several tiers — up to Grandmaster quality once you have progressed far enough.
Picking one
Match the set to your build rather than your preferred look — Griffin does little for a pure Alchemy build, and Manticore does little for a Signs build.
