The Witcher 3: Family Matters Quest Explained

The quest where the search for Ciri leads Geralt into Crookback Bog — and into the presence of the Crones, and Uma.

The Witcher 3 Family Matters quest is part of the Bloody Baron storyline in Velen, and it is where the trail for Ciri leads somewhere genuinely unsettling for the first time.

Where it sits in the story

It follows on from the investigation into where Ciri stayed while passing through Velen, picking up after the Baron points Geralt toward the swamp known as Crookback Bog.

What happens

Geralt travels into the bog to find the Crones — three witch-like figures the local villages both fear and pay tribute to. It is here that Uma is first properly introduced: a deformed, mute creature living among the Crones, who turns out to be far more important to the wider story than he first appears.

Why it matters

This quest is the hinge between the Bloody Baron's personal tragedy and the larger Ciri plot — what looks like a side detour into swamp folklore ends up tying directly back into the main hunt.

Before you go in

Crookback Bog is genuinely dangerous at the level most players reach it, so stock potions and expect a fight on the way rather than a clean walk to a conversation.
